That's a pentatonic scale. It sounds bluesy no matter what
order you play it in. Mess around with those 6 notes.
BREATHING TECHNIQUE:
- Breathe from your diaphragm, not your throat
- Relax your jaw and mouth
- Think of it as breathing THROUGH the harmonica, not AT it
- If you get dizzy, you're trying too hard. Ease up.
FIRST SONGS:
1. "Oh Susanna" -- holes 4-5-6-6-6-5-4-4-5 (all blow)
with 4-5 draw mixed in
2. "Mary Had a Little Lamb" -- 5 blow, 4 draw, 4 blow, 4 draw,

THE 10-MINUTE BLUES SESSION:
1. Put on a 12-bar blues backing track (YouTube, key of G)
2. Play any draw notes between holes 2-6
3. Breathe naturally -- alternate blowing and drawing
4. Cup your hands and open/close for wah effect
5. You're playing blues. It doesn't matter if it's "right."

PLAYING WITH OTHERS:
- Lock into one pattern and repeat it. Consistency is more
important than complexity.
- Listen more than you play. Leave space.
- Match the tempo of whoever started first
- Start soft. You can always get louder.
- A consistent simple pattern is 10x more useful to a group
than a complicated pattern you can't sustain
FINDING DRUM CIRCLES:
- Search "drum circle [your city]" or "community drumming [your city]"
- Check community centers, parks departments, music stores
- Most drum circles welcome complete beginners and often have
spare drums to lend
- Show up, sit down, start with the basic pattern. Listen.

players. Beginners who can't tolerate it quit in 3 days.
RULE 4: PLAY WITH OTHER HUMANS.
You're "ready" to play with others after 2 weeks of daily practice.
Not because you're good, but because ensemble playing is where
the magic happens. It's a social activity.
MILESTONES (realistic):
- Day 1: Play your first chord/rhythm/notes
- Week 1: Play a simplified version of one song
- Week 2: Play 2-3 songs with basic rhythm
- Month 1: Play 5+ songs, switch chords/patterns reasonably smooth
- Month 3: Play along with recordings, jam with others
- Month 6: Play for people without apologizing first
MENTAL HEALTH NOTE:
Playing an instrument for 15 minutes reduces cortisol (stress hormone)
measurably. It's not a metaphor. Music-making is one of the most
evidence-backed stress relief practices that exists. It works
whether you're good at it or not.

If This Fails
- If the user is frustrated after day one, remind them: every musician who ever lived started exactly here. The difference between them and someone who "can't play" is 2-4 weeks of daily practice.
- If finger pain is the barrier (guitar), suggest switching to ukulele or nylon-string guitar temporarily. Come back to steel string after calluses develop.
- If practice isn't happening, suggest pairing it with something they already do (play for 10 minutes after dinner, before bed, during morning coffee).
- If they can't afford an instrument, check local buy-nothing groups, thrift stores (ukuleles and guitars show up constantly), or library instrument lending programs (yes, these exist in many cities).
- If they feel "too old to start," point out that most adult beginners progress faster than children because they have better discipline and motivation. Age is irrelevant.
Rules
- Never prescribe music theory before the user can play their first song. Theory is useful later, alienating early.
- Start with songs the user actually likes, not "educational" songs
- Guitar: acknowledge finger pain honestly. Don't dismiss it.
- Never tell someone they have no musical ability. Rhythm and melody are trainable skills, not fixed traits.
- Emphasize that the goal is playing, not performing. Most people who play instruments never perform publicly, and that's completely fine.
Tips
- A clip-on tuner is better than an app for beginners. It's always there, always accurate, and doesn't drain your phone battery.
- Learning one song really well (from memory, with confidence) is worth more than half-learning ten songs.
- Playing along with recordings is the single best practice method once you know a few chords. Play the song on your phone, play along. Repeat.
- Ukulele to guitar is a natural progression. Ukulele's top 4 strings are the same tuning as guitar's top 4 (with a capo on 5th fret). Skills transfer.
- For guitar players: a capo is a cheat code. It lets you play simple open chords in any key. Buy one immediately.
- The best instrument is the one you'll actually pick up. If it sits in a closet, it doesn't matter how nice it is.
- Leave the instrument out, visible, accessible. Case = closet = forgotten. Stand or wall mount = you'll pick it up while waiting for coffee.
